According to FC Barcelona’s official website the Blaugrana will face Italian side UC Sampdoria in the annual season curtain raiser the Joan Gamper Trophy. The match takes place on Wednesday 10th August, 2016 and will be the first home game of the 2016/2017 season.
Sampdoria have a long history with Barcelona being the team that Barca beat in the 1992 European Cup final thanks that a spectacular Ronald Koeman free kick. Barca have faced Sampdoria twice in the Gamper Trophy twice recently in 1997 and 2012, winning the first encounter on penalties after a 2-2 draw and losing the second 1-0 after a second minute goal when Roberto Soriano scored a diving header from Pedro Obiang’s cross from the left flank. That 1-0 loss was the last loss Barcelona suffered in the Gamper having won the last three editions of the Trophy beating Santos, Club Leon and AS Roma by a combined aggregate of 17-0.
Interestingly of the Barcelona starting xi for the 2012 game, only Sergi Roberto remains in the first team with Pinto, Montoya, Bartra, Fontas, Planas, J.dos Santos, Javi Espinosa, Deulofeu, Afellay and David Villa having all left the club.
Sampdoria finished 15th in Serie A last season with Italian national team striker Eder being their top goalscorer with 13 goals and the aforementioned Roberto Soriano being their second best goalscorer with 8.
